The Stony Brook School History Department Chair Dr. Sean Riley has been appointed Academic Dean, a position created to establish the School as a leader in twenty-first century education.

"The education the world most needs today is exactly the sort of education the School is best equipped to offer," Sean said.  "My responsibilities will be to cast an academic vision for the School, to develop an exciting curriculum relevant to 21st century learning and skills, and to improve the ways we use our time and space to implement that curriculum."  Sean’s vision is for all our classrooms—in mathematics, the sciences, the humanities, and the arts—to be vibrant communities.

Sean holds a BA and an MA from Penn State and a PhD from Baylor University, all in Philosophy.  He has been a member of The Stony Brook School faculty since 2007.

"Sean is the rare combination of vision and execution," said Head of School Joshua Crane, who made the appointment on the recommendation of six SBS educators who considered thirty applicants from across the country.  "We are excited about his leadership and look forward to the fruit it will bring to our academic program."
