Kanas Commons (Capital Campaign)
A Place to Grow: A Campaign for The Stony Brook School
In the last 15 years, three new residence halls and three major dorm renovations have been completed, along with significant upgrades to the School’s academic space, athletic facilities, and worship and assembly areas.
The capstone project of “A Place to Grow: A Campaign for The Stony Brook School,” which began in 2007, is Kanas Commons, which opened for the start of the 2013-2014 academic year. Instantaneously, this central building became a focal point for community-building among day and boarding students, as well as a hub for leadership development.
Situated between Johnston Hall and Barnhouse (see the site plan here),and overlooking both the Campus Green and the athletic fields, this light-filled 19,400-square-foot building contains a spacious dining room on the upper level. A central focus of the lower level is the Hollis Student Center, which houses the school store, student activities offices, mail center, and areas for meeting and recreation.
Kanas Commons embodies our conviction that what happens in the classroom is most deeply received when it is supplemented by formal and informal encounters with teachers and peers. Appropriately, the naming plaque on Kanas Commons expresses our desire for the building:
May God bless this place of
truth and wisdom, faith and goodwill,
and may this always be a safe place
to learn, to think, and to grow.
A Gift and a Challenge
Having experienced both the organic and structured manner in which The Stony Brook School trains students to serve the world through their character and leadership, Board member Elaine Kanas and her husband, John (parents of John ’09), made a transformational challenge gift that sets the stage for many future generations of students to lead and serve.
As the lead donors of Kanas Commons, Elaine and John have affirmed the lifelong value of the kind of education The Stony Brook School offers. Through their giving, they play a critical role in Stony Brook’s timeless mission of developing leaders of character.
John and Elaine, along with The Stony Brook School Board of Trustees, ask the entire SBS community to join together to finish the final chapter of this campaign. As the 2013 calendar year draws to a close, our prayer and work are focused on raising the remaining funds needed to complete the comprehensive funding on this project. Many families are making pledges over two or three years; others are making one-time gifts. Your generous gift will take us an important step closer to our goal. To make a gift online with a credit card, simply fill out our giving form, add your gift amount to the box marked “Capital Funds” and check the first box under the “Special Instructions” section, specifying “Kanas Commons” and any desired naming opportunity in the accompanying text field.
