Student Support and Enrichment
There are times when students need additional support as they navigate the daily challenges presented in the classroom. There are times when students could benefit from enriching experiences that are likely to enhance the classroom learning. The following programs are designed to meet those students' needs.
Individual Student Support
The case managers meet with individual students one to five times each week to:
- Plan for the week ahead
- Review the previous week and make relevant adjustments
- Address any content or organizational issues
The Highlands Program Learning Strategies
The Highlands Program Learning Strategies addresses one factor that influences learning–natural abilities (as assessed by the Highlands Ability Battery). The ability scores indicate how quickly and easily a person takes in and recalls information using a particular learning channel. Specific suggestions are given for how best to use this knowledge to maximize learning.
The Writing Lab
Two evenings each week, tutors are available to aid students with their writing assignments. Students do their own work, but have the support and expertise of the writing lab team. This team will:
- Point out problem areas in student writing.
- Direct them to descriptions of the writing problems.
- Encourage them to study or review areas of grammatical or stylistic weaknesses that occur in their own writing.
- Encourage them to revise their own writing.
We often think of coaches in terms of athletics – facilitating individuals/teams in achieving their maximum potential. In the academic context, the coach assists the student in developing strategies to overcome obstacles that inhibit him or her from achieving and sustaining success. Coaching includes the following:
- The Highlands Ability Battery
The Highlands Ability Battery helps the individual identify his or her natural abilities, giving valuable insight into how he or she prefers to use his or her intelligence and experience. College-bound juniors and seniors may find the Highlands helpful in planning for their college and professional careers.
- The Master Student Program
The Master Student Program is designed to assist the already motivated student who welcomes help in moving from being good to being excellent. The student needs to clearly express a personal desire to be part of this program and a willingness to commit to doing what it takes to achieve his or her goals. The program is offered to middle and upper school students separately. Over a five week period, students meet once each week to focus on a specific skill necessary for becoming a master student. Students in the program also receive some individual coaching and follow-up suggestions for continuing to implement the skills and strategies they have learned.
- Life Coaching
The student meets once each week for a class period with the life coach. The goal is to help the student grow in the ability to manage his or her life and receive skills training that will enhance personal development. The areas of focus include:
- Study skills
- Time management
- Organizational skills
- Goal setting
- Communication skills
- Conflict resolution
Private tutoring for help with content in specific subject areas can be arranged based on availability of tutors.
The services offered are designed to help students become independent, motivated learners who are willing to take ownership for their own education, set clear, realistic academic and life goals and to develop a solid plan for achieving those goals.
