From the Head of School

A warm welcome from The Stony Brook School.  May your contact with us via our website be both informative and encouraging.

The Stony Brook School was founded in 1922 with the motto, “Character Before Career.” The academic standards here are high, the program rigorous—our graduates matriculate at the best colleges and universities in the country—but the governing idea is that what matters most is who students are, morally and spiritually.  It’s character that counts.

The pursuit of academic excellence then is carried out in a community of shared convictions about what is good, true, and beautiful, but a community where, at the same time, tough questions are encouraged and honestly engaged.

Our student body is diverse and our program comprehensive, meant to cultivate—along with intellectual competence—student interest and ability in art, music and athletics, among a wide range of activities.

At the heart of Stony Brook’s life, as at any really good school, are its teachers, and ours are outstanding—competent, informed, articulate, deeply committed to the academic and spiritual lives of their students.  Our teachers make Stony Brook the exceptional place it is.

Animating Stony Brook’s life is a vital faith in Christ, who is the source of all goodness, truth, and beauty—indeed the source of the character, as well as the intellectual vibrancy, that is our goal.

Of course a website can tell you only so much.  The best way to appreciate what The Stony Brook School is about is to contact us, in person if you can.  We’d love to meet you, show you around, answer your questions, and tell you more.

Every blessing.

Dr. Richard Riesen
Interim Head of School
