By the City, By the Sea
The Stony Brook School is located on the North Shore of Long Island in the historic and picturesque town of Stony Brook, NY. The School’s founders chose the site for its natural beauty and proximity to New York City, two characteristics that have served the School well throughout its history.
The Long Island Rail Road’s Stony Brook Station is across the street from our campus. Trains travel daily and with great regularity to Penn Station in New York City, a distance of about 50 miles. Throughout the year the School schedules various excursions to take advantage of the city’s numerous cultural offerings.
Two major airports--JFK International Airport and LaGuardia Airport--are located within 40 miles of our campus, and the Long Island MacArthur Airport, just a 15 minute drive away, is another option for domestic travel to and from our campus via Southwest Airlines and US Airways. These three airports have helped make The Stony Brook School extremely accessible to our boarding families. Further, the ferry connecting Long Island to Bridgeport, CT leaves from the neighboring town of Port Jefferson, NY--a service especially convenient for regional and New England families.
The School is also adjacent to The State University of New York (SUNY) at Stony Brook. While at The Stony Brook School, advanced students are able to make use of this academic resource through the University’s Young Scholars Program.
Finally, the beaches, harbors and wetlands that make up the northern coast of Long Island are known for their beauty and scientific interest. The School strives to take full advantage of its ideal maritime setting, offering sail training, sail competition, and the study of the marine environment through its Marine & Environmental Programs (MEP).
