On Saturday, September 29, The Stony Brook School marine Science Program contributed to the National Estuary Day Festival sponsored by The Long Island Seaport and Eco-Center (LISEC).
The festival took place at Harbor View Park in Port Jefferson and was attended by more than 1,000 people.
Capt. George Linzee, Director of Marine Programs at The Stony Brook School, arranged for the school's portable touch tank to be setup with live marine animals as part of the Festival's activities.
Karina Scavo, of Mt. Sinai, a junior in his Honors Marine Science course, volunteered to instruct and supervise the tank and animals for the day.
Drawing from her summer studies with Research Under Sail, one of the school's summer marine programs, Karina shared with children and adults her knowledge about the Asian Shore Crab invasive species, samples of which she was able to collect on the beach in front of the park.
LISEC President Kathy O'Sullivan had nothing but praise for
Karina's ability to engage participants and educate them in a fun and factual
manner regarding this new and significant species.
