SBS Alumnus Chris Higgins '06 Named to All-USA College Academic Team

The June 9, 2010, issue of USA Today named Chris Higgins '06 to its 20-member 21st annual All-USA College Academic First Team - a talented group of "solution-oriented individuals who are not afraid to take risks" and whose achievements "began with dreams and daring." A rising senior at Harvard, Chris spent several months in 2007 at New Hope Orphanage in Uganda, where he volunteered as an English teacher. The following year, Chris founded the Friends of New Hope Foundation to raise money and coordinate volunteers for the orphanage. Since then, the foundation has raised 95% of the orphanage's budget and recruited over 20 volunteers, including several from The Stony Brook School alumni community. In addition, with Ugandan university students, Chris has been researching the effect of poverty on child welfare in the community.

A social studies major at Harvard University, Chris is a member of the University's Phi Betta Kappa chapter. His academic research focuses on economic development and Chinese influence in Sub-Saharan Africa. A US Army ROTC cadet, Chris will serve as a 2nd Lieutenant after graduating from Harvard in 2011. He then hopes to pursue a career in economic development in Asia and Africa.
