Chess Team Places Nationally

Coming off an undefeated season and their ninth consecutive Suffolk County Chess Championship Title, The Stony Brook School chess team went to the National Chess Championships to compete against 1,222 others in Atlanta, GA. Each player from the team played seven matches over three days with some matches lasting as long as four hours. The scores from the top four people on each team are counted to generate the team score.

The "Under 800" team (Michael Chung, Nara Shin, Jeremy Yoo, Brendan Kung, and James Kwon) brought home a 6th place trophy for their division. The "Under 1200" team (Wilson Lu, Robert Chen, Mick Kim, and Jerry Lin) played solidly, but did not medal in their respective division.

Top SBS player, Kyryll Gavrylchenko (New York), played in the Open Division (highest possible) and tied for 85th place out of 338 which is the highest a Stony Brook student has ever placed at the Nationals. Team captain, Jeffrey Lin, our number two board, played in a very difficult "Under 1600" division and had some very competitive matches. Lastly, Michael Chung tied for third place in the "Under 800" division with a 6-1 record; he received the 6th place trophy on tiebreakers. This was the 2nd best finish ever for a Stony Brook student in his/her respective division.
